What is Food Security?
Food Security is making sure that all people at all times have access
to adequate amounts of safe, nutritious, culturally appropriate foods,
produced in an environmentally sustainable way and provided in a manner
that promotes dignity.
When thinking about food security in relation to our community, some questions we ask ourselves might be:
- Does the community have access to local-grown nutritious food?
- What happens when families can't afford to buy nutritious food?
- How do new-comers to the province adjust to the different foods available?
- What role do community gardens, farmers markets and community kitchens play in enhancing people's ability to eat well?
- Do we have a sustainable agricultural system?
Our organization provides a marketing tool for a community's food-related businesses and raises the profile of local food-related agencies whilst also creating a mechanism to support those in need of food assistance.
Our books are used as a fundraiser. The partnering charities directly receive proceeds from all book sales and that makes them truly 'cookbooks with a difference to make a difference'.
Since 2009, critical funds has been raised for the following Greater-Vancouver -based charities working towards better food distribution and food security in the community from the sales of our Commercial Drive 2009, Commercial Drive 2010, Kitsilano, West End and Austin Heights Cook the 'Hood editions:
