What is Food Security?

Food Security is making sure that all people at all times have access to adequate amounts of safe, nutritious, culturally appropriate foods, produced in an environmentally sustainable way and provided in a manner that promotes dignity.

When thinking about food security in relation to our community, some questions we ask ourselves might be:

  • Does the community have access to local-grown nutritious food?
  • What happens when families can't afford to buy nutritious food?
  • How do new-comers to the province adjust to the different foods available?
  • What role do community gardens and community kitchens play in enhancing people's ability to eat well?
  • Do we have a sustainable agricultural system?

Community Gardens

Sow the seed and watch it grow! In a plot, in a pot, on your windowsill, in your backyard - you can grow your own vegetables and herbs anywhere.

Community Kitchens

Cooking and sharing food bonds families, friends and neighbours. No one person is doing all the work so everyone shares the responsiblilty of ensuring everyone goes home with good food.

Farmers' Markets

There's more than just lettuce at today's Farmers' Markets. From mouth-watering baked goods to preserves to the wide-array of fresh in-season produce you're not only supporting those who grow food, but food artisans in your community.
